Dr Ubong Ekpene, a Consultant Neurosurgeon at the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital, Akwa Ibom, Nigeria. He operated on a man who had 7 long nails hammered into his head. "The operation was successful." The patient has been discharged without a single neurological deficit.
This story hits differently because I skimmed through a series of research papers on PubMed and realized that there was no single report of any patient anywhere around the world who had a nail removed from their Brain with their neurological functions intact.
This man, Dr Ubong Ekpene, from Akwa Ibom state of Nigeria, performed that magnificent feat, not in a hospital in Dallas but in the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital, Akwa Ibom State, a federal medical institution in Nigeria with very limited facilities. He celebrated this and gave his flowers while he was alive. God bless him. It is amazing what skill and commitment can make one achieve even in a resource-poor setting.
Nigerian Doctors are truly one of the best in the world. Not one, Not two, not three, not four, not five, not 6, but 7. Doctors are second to God. God bless Dr Ekpene. God bless the Nigerian Doctors still staying behind despite the hostile working environment and poor remuneration.
Between, the patient claimed to have hammered the nails himself as he was hearing strong voices urging him to kill himself. It was later gathered that it may be a spiritual attack or under mental health issue but the most important news is that the victim is alive and sound. Congratulations to the Doctor and the Victim.
